History of Montecito HS

Montecito High School has been operating as a continuation high school since September 1968. Currently, we operate as an alternative high school.

We have grown from an opening student population of 30, staffed by a teaching principal and two teachers, to an enrollment of 150 staffed by a full time principal, seven full-time teachers, three instructional aides, a student advisor/ counselor, librarian, secretary and registrar/clerk.

We have changed location four times as we continue to grow. We spent the first six years in a Quonset hut and an additional small stucco schoolhouse located on Montecito Road. Our school name was derived from that location. Montecito High School has been located at the present site since 1985.

Beginning in the school year of 1986-1987, Montecito High School established an evening GED testing center on campus.

In 1994, the Ramona Rotary Club adopted Montecito High School. The past year we developed internships and partnerships with businesses in the community. These are but small examples of our acceptance in the Ramona community.

In 1995, 2005, and 2015 the State of California Office of Education selected Montecito High School as a Model Continuation High School. This honor reflects the efforts and achievements by the staff and students of our school. In 2014, Montecito High School received a full six-year accreditation, with a three-year review, from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Our school received the highest recommendation allowable under the guidelines of WASC. We believe this further authenticates our commitment to our students and their learning.
